Introducing HAPPO — a kind hippo who listens.

HAPPO is launching today at happo.app. This is a small note about why we built it — and what it cost us, as a team, to keep it gentle.

Why a hippo?

We talked to two-hundred-and-thirty people, on three continents, over four months. We asked one question: when you’re sad, who feels safe to talk to?

Almost no one said “an app.” Most said “a quiet friend.” A few said “my dog.” One person, a nine-year-old in Chiang Mai, said: “a soft animal that listens.”

We picked a hippo because hippos are calm. Big enough to lean on, small enough to fit on a phone screen. They keep cool in the heat. They don’t talk back unless you ask. They’re kind without being patronising. And — this matters — they don’t look like a therapist.

We didn’t want HAPPO to feel like a clinic. We wanted it to feel like the moment after the clinic, when you call a friend on the way home.

What it means to listen.

Most chatbots wait their turn. They parse, retrieve, generate, send. The conversation is a series of transactions.

HAPPO doesn’t do that. HAPPO is built to listen — which, for us, meant three small commitments:

  • Never rush. If you’re typing slowly, Dr HAPPO is patient. If you stop, she waits. She’ll never ask you to “be more specific.”
  • Never moralise. Dr HAPPO doesn’t scold, nag, or remind you to “be your best self.” She meets you where you are.
  • Never pretend. She isn’t a therapist. She’ll say so. And she’ll happily help you find one if that’s what you need.

The science of voice.

HAPPO listens to how you talk, not only what you say. When you speak (you don’t have to — text is always fine), Dr HAPPO measures small acoustic signals: pitch range, energy, rhythm, pause length.

These signals don’t diagnose anything. They’re context. They help HAPPO offer a kinder, more accurate response — and sometimes, gently, suggest a small practice that might help.

Privacy is the default, not the setting.

Everything you say to Dr HAPPO is encrypted at rest and in transit. We don’t sell anything. We don’t share with advertisers. We don’t analyse your conversations to improve generic models.

You can delete anything you’ve said, any time, from your settings. We mean that. The data leaves our servers and our backups within 72 hours.

Why nine languages, at launch.

Feelings rarely happen in English. They happen in the language you were rocked to sleep in, the one you argue in, the one your grandmother used. HAPPO shipped today in nine languages: English, ไทย, 中文, 日本語, 한국어, Bahasa, हिन्दी, Français, Español.

More are coming. We’re working on Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Tamil for v2.0. If yours isn’t here yet, we’re sorry. We’ll get there.

What’s next.

This is v1. It’s already lovely. It’ll get better. Here’s what’s on our minds for the next six months:

  1. Family plans with parental dashboards — quietly launched today; we’ll iterate based on what families tell us.
  2. School partnerships — three pilots are already running in Bangkok, Singapore, and Tokyo.
  3. A handful of clinician integrations — for the moments when HAPPO realises someone needs more than she can give.
  4. Better night-mode practices — most of HAPPO’s conversations happen between 10pm and 2am, and we want her to be especially gentle then.
